Extension FAQs & Info

We offer a full line of adjustable and removable weighted tails!
Weighted tail extensions are our specialty, a great alternative to achieve the sought after look for competition. Reconditioning and repairs can be done on most tails.
H2TB tail extensions are available as Single, Single & Weighted, Double and Double & Weighted. Custom hair weight and weight added tails extensions can be done upon request as well. We can also provide you a "slide through" tail instead of a double loop, just reach out to us to order! There are also other options to help those horses that need help "hiding" a tail extension.
H2TB Standard Hair Weight Sizes:
- Single Hair = ~1.25 -1.5 Lbs
- Double Hair = ~2.5 - 3 Lbs
- Weighted= plus ~1.00 - 1.25 Lbs
*For example, a double & weighted is >~3.5 Lbs (This is our most popular tail extension size)
H2TB Standard Hair Lengths:
- 30 - 32" (Yearling/Longe-Liners & Reiner/Cow Horses)
- 34 - 36" (All around horses - the most standard length)
-
38 - 40" (Hunter Jumper/Hunter under Saddle/VERY short tail bones)
- Usually a 40" length is for a 17hh horse and above - H2TB does not always keep these lengths in stock (especially flattens/whites so please plan accordingly so we can get you scheduled on our next hair order)
Please remember, these are hand-made tail extensions, each tail is unique and will not always weigh the same as the next one due to the manufacturing and washing process of the hair, epoxy added, initial shedding, etc. Please reach out with any questions.
Tail Extensions are available in a variety of "tops":
- Slide - A small section of the real tail is braided and inserted into the hole of the tail extension - please reach out to us to request this type of tail.
- 2 Loops - This is the most popular top version and how our tail extensions come as a standard. 2 loops are mounted at the top of the tail extension to braid into the real tail. We can also offer just one loop but that is only recommended for non weighted tail extensions. Note - Please see images as these are not "braiders loop" tail extensions which can also be ordered special.
Braiding in your Tail Extension
2 Loops Tail Extension (most common)- Find your desired length by going up or down on the tail bone so that the tail extension is at the proper distance from the ground where it will not be stepped on. At that point on the tail bone, make 3 6" braids straight across from one another and at least as thick as the loops on top of the tail extension.
- Pull right braid through right loop on tail extension from outside of the loop to the middle. Pull left braid through left loop from the outside to the middle. Use the middle braid as your third braid and braid them tightly together so they hold the tail extension against the tail bone.
- Pull the braid back between the 2 loops on the tail extension so the braid is now on the back side of the tail extension. To help take the strain off of the loops, lift up the tail extension and put matching color electrical tape around the rubber top and the braid to secure.
- Tail extension & ties are 100% horse hair to comply with breed association rules. Please reference your governing association for the most up to date regulations.
- If you have purchased a "Double/Stacked" tail extension, it is imperative that you dry completely after washing due to the thickness. If the under tail is not dry, the hair (particularly the white/flaxen hairs) will break/shed due to mildew & humidity from moisture, specifically if stored inside a hot trailer & not completely dry prior to storing. Blow drying & fan usage is highly recommended to dry thoroughly.
- It is possible that your tail extension will shed at first which is completely normal due to the individual lengths of the hair during assembly.
- If you purchased a dyed black tail extension, some dye might wash out at first when washing which will subside. Dyed tail extensions should maintain jet black color for 4 -5 years.
- It is recommended to use blue dish detergent (as needed) to remove grease, sweat & other chemicals within the hair, especially in the summer months (think of oil spills and wildlife). We also use common shampoos/conditioners for regular washing. Comb hair after extension is dry.
- It is also recommended to store in a dry and cool location like your show clothing.
Please don't hesitate to reach out with any other questions.
Forelock Extensions
For our Pull through forelock, you utilize a crochet hook to slide onto your horse's existing hair. This type of forelock can be easier to hide and also used for braiding as well as normal banding.
"How to" instructions can be found below for inserting your pull through forelock:
1. Place the forelock near the very top (crown) of your horse's head that is closest to the start of the bridle path. Grab a piece of your horse's forelock with the crochet hook after inserting the crochet hook through the loop of the extension. Pull through. *Note: You will need a smaller crochet latch to make the process easier - We recommend a 3.8mm.

2. Once you have pulled through your horse's natural forelock, the extension is now connected onto the natural forelock. You will then start banding down which secures the extension.
3. Band down with multiple bands for that sharp look! *Note: It does take a lot of practice to get the perfect look but it is so worth it!
